Substance Dependence (SD), means a number of treatable mental diseases that usually accompany other psychiatric illness. International scientific studies show that rule more than the exception is that each patient with Substance Dependence have one or more other mental disorder. This make the psychiatric evaluation-intervention an absolute necessity in most cases. In mental diseases any medicine alone is not considered a complete treatment and must be complemented with multiple psychotherapeutic interventions integrated in a single place and program.

Intensive outpatient programs as ALTERNATIVAS (also known as enhanced outpatient treatment programs), have shown in scientific research to be more cost effective for most patients with active SD, than regular outpatient (also known as office based treatment ), therapeutic communities and hospital treatments. Very few programs named "treatment or rehabilitation" offer real research based treatment for addictions nor for other mental illness. Support groups (AA, NA, GA, and other 12 step ) are important complement to treatment but are not treatment and don't pretend to be so.

We are the only research based ambulatory treatment program in Puerto Rico with a board certified addiction psychiatrist that is director of a complete interdisciplinary treatment teem. We include all the research based elements needed for an effective treatment that more than 30 years of scientific research had discovered (as defined by National Institute of Drug Abuse). We also use laboratory, and scientific tests to measure severity of symptoms, and help to diagnose any co occurring medical, mental, personality and cognitive or neuropsychiatric disorders.

Now the families with these health problems do not have to separate and go to other countries for cost effective quality therapy.

We have a sub-specialized interdisciplinary addiction psychiatric treatment teem with: Addiction Psychiatrist; Social Worker; Clinical Psychologist Doctor and a Case Manager all with more than fifteen years working with addiction patients in specialized addiction programs.

We follow all NIDA recommendations for treatment and have a combination of multiple modalities of therapy: individual, group, family, psycho-educational, blockers, Buprenorfine. We treat all co-occurring psychiatric illness at the same time and place.

Addiction is a common and non specific name for a lot of psychiatric disorders such as drugs or alcohol related disorders (Substance Abuse or Dependence), compulsive behaviors (pathological gambling, co-dependence, compulsive sex, buying and others). Recent research evidence that more than 60% of the patients with Substances or Alcohol Dependence also have other psychiatric illness. We are a group of therapists specialized in the treatment of Substance Dependence (drugs and alcohol addiction) and any other psychiatric co-ocurring disorder (co -morbid psychiatric disorders).
